NFL Rookie qb's

This years NFL rookie quarterback class is in the discussion of being one of the best years for the position in NFL history.

            The Indianapolis Colts took Andrew Luck 1st overall in the Draft.

The Washington Redskins traded several draft picks to the St. Louis Rams to move up to the 2^nd overall pick and with that pick they picked Robert Griffin III. He is known as RG3.

The Miami Dolphins took Ryan Tannehill with the 8^th overall pick, many felt that the pick was not a good pick, since Tannehill had only played 1 season at quarterback at Texas A&M.

The Cleveland Browns took the last quarterback of the first round by selecting Brandon Weeden with the 22^nd overall pick. Weeden was considered a risk at the time because of his age. The quarterback choices were over until late in the second round when the Denver Broncos selected Brock Osweiler of Arizona State with the 25^th pick in the 2^nd round to back up Peyton Manning.

The Seattle Seahawks took Russell Wilson from Wisconsin in the 3^rd round despite having signed Matt Flynn from the Green Bay Packers. Former NFL coach John Gruden thought Wilson would be the steal of the draft.

            Later in the 3^rd round, the Philadelphia Eagles selected Nick Foles to back up Michael Vick.

The last quarterback I will be discussing is the Washington Redskins 4^th round pick, Kirk Cousins. Many questioned the pick because of taking 2 quarterbacks in their first 3 picks.http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/14880/kirk-cousins
Many projected the 4 quarterbacks taken in the 1st round to start right away for their teams, and all 4 did. However, there was a 5th quarterback to start that many were shocked by. 

Russell Wilson beat out Matt Flynn to start for the Seattle Seahawks.

 Andrew Luck has brought the Colts from the worst team last season to a team with a real shot at the postseason with 9 wins so far this season.

RG3 has brought huge success to the Redskins this season. Not only are they in the race for the playoffs, they have a real shot at the NFC division.

Ryan Tannehill had a great start to the season, but has recently slowed down a bit, but he may have proved to many for the time being that he was not a bad pick.

Despite having a slow start, Brandon Weeden has been able to help turn the Browns season around. The Browns have a small percent chance of making the playoffs, but at only 5 wins, the Browns will most likely miss the postseason, but have a lot to build on.

Osweiler has not played any significant time this year because of the health of Peyton Manning.

Nick Foles took over for Michael Vick after Vick went down with a concussion. Foles will be the starting qb for the Eagles for the remainder of the year, and is the favorite to start for the team next year.

Kirk Cousins has backed up RG3 all season until RG3 went down this past Sunday with a sprain in his knee.  Cousins in the final drive of the game led the Redskins to tie the game with a touchdown then a two-point conversion. The Redskins won the game with a field goal in overtime.

Halfway there!!

NFL season last night finished week 8 of the season.  Some shocking teams to do well this year, and other teams have underperformed this year.  At the halfway point here are the standings

NFC EAST

New York Giants  5-2
Philadelphia Eagles 3-4
Dallas Cowboys 3-4
Washington Redskins 3-4

The eagles have been dissapointing, they signed all the great players who havent performed, and moving a OL coach to Defensive Coordinator well, thats a mistake so far, but we still have 9 games for everyone in the division, so hey, they could still pull it out

NFC NORTH

Green Bay Packers 7-0
Detroit Lions 6-2
Chicago Bears 4-3
Minnesota Vikings 2-6

Well, no surprise to me here.  The Pack are the team to beat this year, and well, they havent been beat, but this month they will be tested with games against the Chargers Bucs Vikings and Lions.   3 of those teams are in the playoff race, and the 4th played with the Pack just a few weeks ago, so its gonna be a fun race here.

The point of my blog is to give my opinion about different things in sports. I sometimes talk about the standings, or trades and signings, or whatever else is going on in sports.  I have a very good knowledge about most sports, which I believe is an advantage for me since I want to go into the sports media, since I won't have to learn about a sport to be able to cover it better.
   The people who would read my blog are fans of sports, and I believe since of my knowledge of all sports I can reach out to more fans, because I can talk about their favorite sports.
   Blogs are valuable to marketing because businesses can learn what people like, and they can research blogs and other social sites to see what people care about, and to see how people feel about there products.

Joe Paterno

Today, January 22, 2012, the world of sports has lost a legend.  Joe Paterno, the longtime coach of Penn State Univeristy, lost his brief battle with lung cancer. If you are a sports fan you know what Joe Paterno has done for the university.  If you are not a sports fan, and have never heard of Joe Pa until October, your view is going to be wrong.

Joe Paterno donated millions of dollars to the university for libraries, books, and scholarships.  His players, more often than not, graduated (look at the big schools like USC, Texas, Michigan, Ohio State etc, their players usually leave to go to the NFL after their junior year).   Joe Paterno was a great leader, and man, but thats not how many non sports fans are going to remember him.

In September or October of 2011, a news story broke out about one of Paterno's assistant coaches molested some boys.

These incidents happened in the 90s.  One of the younger coaches on the team then saw the coach do innapropriate things to the child, and called his father who told him to ignore it, and that he probably just saw it wrong.  The young man then went to Coach Pa, who contacted Campus police who didnt do anything.  Joe Pa should have gone to the police yes, but he didnt.  I am scared that his legacy will be what he didnt do, not what he did do.

I'm reminded of 5 men from the Bible when I hear think of Joe Paterno: Noah, David, Solomon, Paul, and Judas.

Noah was an alcoholic, but most people remember him as the man who built the arc.
David killed a man and committed adultery, yet God himself called him a man after God's own heart, and we all know the story of David and Goliath.
Solomon married alot of women (i dont know the number on the top of my head) but was considered the wisest man to ever live.
And Paul was first called Saul and he killed Christians, but he is remembered as a great Apostle.
Judas was a disciple of Jesus, one of the 12, but he betrayed Jesus, and that is how we all remember him.

How will we remember Coach Paterno?  (I dont know if he was a Christian or not?) Are you going to remember him as I will as a great coach, and someone who young men looked up to? Or are you going to remember him for what he didnt do?

1.  San Francisco WINS the superbowl

2. New England loses in their first game

3. Cincinnati goes to the AFC championship game

4. The Lions win a playoff game

5. The Packers (a Packer fan gave me this statement) are one and done

NFL preseason predictions

Here we are, the NFL regular season is sneaking up on us, and its gonna be an exciting year (besides this new kickoff rule which will hurt teams like the Chicago Bears.  Well, heres my predictions for division winner, wild card winners, and some of the individual awards.


AFC EAST

1. New England Patriots (12-4)
2. New York Jets (10-6)
3. Miami Dolphins (6-10)
4. Buffalo Bills (5-11)

The Patriots look scary this year, and the Jets have also improved, but the Patriots just look good so far this preseason, and they might win more than the 12 I am giving them, but we will see .  Jets win one wild card slot

AFC NORTH
1.  Pittsburg Steelers (12-4)
2. Baltimore Ravens (11-5)
3.  Cleveland Browns (8-8)
4. Cincinnati Benglas (2-14)

Baltimore and Pittsburgh... one will win the division, the other is getting in the playoffs in the wild card slot, leaving the other two divisions that much more important to win
AFC NORTH
1. Indianopolis Colts (11-5)
2. Houston Texans (9-7)
3. Jacksonville Jaguars (8-8)
4. Tennesee Titans (6-10)

Close division here, and these numbers are based on IF peyton is healthy all 16 games.   If he comes back week one, expect a slow start to the season for the colts, but its peyton, he finds a way to win.

AFC WEST
1. San Diego Chargers (11-5)
2. Kansas City Chiefs (9-7)
3. Denver Broncos ( 6-10)
4. Oakland Raiders (5-11)

QB advantage here is San Diego,  and thats why i have them winning the division.

Wild Card Jets and Ravens.

NFC EAST
1. Philadelphia Eagles (12-4)
2. New York Giants (9-7)

sorry rex grossman, but the Eagles are gonna win this year.

Packers if healthy will win this division running away, but the Lions (this is a heart pick, but i really see a 10 win season here) will have a good season, and make the playoffs

3.Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7)
4. Carolina Panthers (4-12)

After a great season last year, everyone will be more prepared with Tampa Bay, but they will still have a decent year, but fall one game short of the playoffs.

NFC WEST

1. St. Louis Rams (9-7)
2. Arizona Cardinals (7-9)
3. San Francisco 49ers ( 5-11)
4. Seattle Seahawks (4-12)

Weakest division in football, and once again, the only reason why St louis wins is cuz they have the best qb, and thats y the other 3 teams arent winning.  Ari has a good qb, but fall short, and SF and Sea are rebuilding teams.

MLB predictions

Its here, the dog days of summer.  The last month and a half or so of the regular season of baseball.  Most of the divisions are in a tight race right now, and even awards like the cy young and MVP awards for both leagues are in tight races.. So heres my vote and prediction for the winners of each division, wild card, and MVP/ CY Young

Lets start with the senior circuit.. the national league

Philadelphia

The East, well, just look at the standings, Philly, unless they have a huge letdown that I dont see happening, is going to win this division

Central: 

Milwaukee

St. Louis 3 GB

Pittsburgh 9.5 GB

Cincinatti 10 GB

ChiC  16 GB

Hou 27 GB

This division is probably the hardest to pick in the NL.  Even though the West race is closer, the Central has 2 teams that have the talent to run away with the division.   I think that St Louis will win the division, but it will be a fun race. 

West

SD  12. GB

The West, even though is closer, I dont think it will be a tight race towards the last few weeks.  Arizona is a young team, and I think the pressure of the late season will get to them, while San Francisco is the reigning MLB champs, and has a great pitching staff, and the addition of Carlos Beltran will help.  

NL Wild card

Atlanta.  

Great team, they might be 8.5 games back of Philly, but they are 4.5 up in the Wild card, and I feel they have the pitching and hitting to get them in the playoffs. 

NL MVP: 

This isnt who i think will win, this is who i would vote for if I had a vote this year.   My NL MVP is Lance Berkman of the Cardinals.  Pujols missed a few weeks with a injury earlier this year,  and Berkman kept the team in the hunt of things. 

NL Cy Young-  Roy Halladay Philadelphia.   Easy pick, no pitcher in the NL has dominated like he has so far this year. 

Now time for the American League.

What a crazy year in this division. Cleveland came running out of the gates on fire, great start, but they have cooled down since, and find themselves in second place.  I dont see them getting past Detroit, the Jimenez deal for Cleveland was a good move, but I think the Tigers will win it.

Another fun race here, but Texas has too much depth EVERYWHERE on this team.  They win the division. 

AL Wild Card

The yankees will win this, but they have alot of issues with some players right now, and they wont win the world series this year.

again, this is my vote, not what i say will happen, but who i say deserves. 

Asdrubel Cabrera from Cleveland.  Someone from Boston will win it, but their lineup is stacked, and if one of them gets hurt, someone else will pick up the slack. 

AL Cy Young... 

Hardest pick of all the races, but I give it to my boy Justin Verlander.  3 games so far he has taken a no hitter into the 7th inning .   Every time he goes on the mound people watching the game expect something great.
